Apple has posted the iMac Power Management Update 1.1 - which will allow your iMac to keep date & time and other Control Panel settings for a longer period of time when disconnected from AC power. This update is intended for use with Macs released in February or July 2001 (iMacs - early 2001 and iMacs summer 2001).

Apple has posted its Mac OS 9.2.1 Update. Mac OS 9.2 is not generally available, but is bundled on newer Macs released at Macworld Expo New York last July. The Mac OS 9.2.1 update is for both computers with Mac OS 9.2 installed and Mac OS 9.1! [82.1 MB]

Apple has released GeForce Graphics Card Update 2.1.1, an update that installs new firmware and drivers for Macs equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. The new version improves performance and compatibility and fixes a compatibility problem with newer versions of the NVIDIA system extensions. [2.5 MB]

Apple has released QuickTime 5.0.2, a new version of its cross-platform multimedia application. Current users of QuickTime 5 can update by running the QuickTime Updater that's included with their existing version of the QuickTime Player. [Stand-alone form]

Authoring Support 1.1.2 is a new version of the drivers for adding CD burning support to OS 9.1. Version 1.1.2 adds compatibility for the Que! Fire 16x10x40x drives which use the Teac or Plextor drive mechanism, the VST 8x Bus Powered FireWire CD-RW drives which use the Teac drive mechanism, as well as the Logitec 12x10x32 LCW-P1210BF. CD-R drive manufacturers often use several different mechanisms in the same CD-R product; Apple has only tested the aforementioned combinations of models and mechanisms. [1.0MB]

Apple has released DVD Player 2.7, an updated version of its software-based DVD decoder, for Mac OS 9.1 and "iMac DV (Slot Loading), Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics), or PowerBook (FireWire)" machines. (The update reportedly addresses a number of performance issues.) [3.3MB]

Apple has released a PowerBook G4 DVD-ROM 1.2 Update that improves support for the insertion and mounting of optical media on the popular laptop. The DVD-ROM Update places new firmware on the Apple DVD-ROM drive installed in PowerBook G4 Titanium computers. PowerBook G4 owners running Mac OS X must boot into OS 9.1 to run the update. [849 KB]

Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ) 2.2.5 is Apple's implementation of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), based on Sun Microsystems' Java 1.1.8 specification. MRJ provides the runtime software needed to run Java applets and applications, and the Apple Applet Runner, a simple utility for running applets without the overhead of a browser. [5.3MB]

Apple released two networking utility updates during the day yesterday:

  1. Network Assistant 4.0.3 fixes a number of outstanding issues in Apple's remote network-management application, including file copying problems with Mac OS 9.1, communications errors with the Announce and Talk features, and issues with remote desktop rebuilding and DOS-formatted floppies.
  2. Macintosh Manager 2.0.1 "fixes an issue where the workstation would hang while trying to synchronize files in the backpack folder during check in."


Apple Theater Mode Update 2.0.3
resolves compatibility issues with the Theater Mode Extension for OS 9, Quicktime Player 4.1.3 and 5.0, and the Classic environment on OS X. Theater Mode is used on some iMacs and on desktop Macintosh systems that have an Apple Studio Display CRT attached (with the Apple Display Connector). It brightens movie playback in some applications like iMovie and QuickTime Player. The update is also available using the Software Update control panel in Classic. [1.1 MB]

Apple's iBook Audio Update 1.3.6, released late last week via the Software Update control panel, is now available on the Web. The update improves the quality of sound output on the new Dual-USB iBook introduced in May 2001. [1.9 MB]

Carbon Lib 1.3.1 is available. CarbonLib 1.3.1 delivers new functionality and features for Carbon-based applications on Mac OS 8.6, all Mac OS 9 releases and Mac OS X. [2.2MB]

Open Transport Update 2.7.6 is now available via the Software Update control panel and Apple's Software Downloads page. [1.6MB]

This update resolves a minor issue that prevented some applications from behaving as expected. It is recommended for all customers, especially in education. This update is for Mac OS 9.1 only. It will not install on earlier versions.

Apple Authoring Support 1.1 is now available for separate download. The update "adds support for new drives, and increases reliability for your CD burning apps like iTunes and Disc Burner." The software also includes a new version of Apple System Profiler that will tell whether a CD-RW drive is compatible with iTunes/Disc Burner. [2.3 MB]

"If you have Toast 5.0.1, the Apple USB or Firewire Support extensions must be turned on as well as the Toast extensions or a Finder crash will happen when a blank disc is inserted." The Toast v5.01 update Read Me warns that if you install or update Authoring Support after installing the Toast v5.01 update, you have to manually disable the FireWire Authoring Support and USB Authoring Support extensions in order for Toast to work properly.

Apple DVD Player 2.4 - Only for OS 9.1 & iMac DV, G4 (AGP), PowerBook (FireWire) [2.7MB]

Apple Disk First Aid 8.6.1 Drive repair utility [685K]
1) This version of Disk First Aid repairs certain types of master drectory block damage on Mac OS Extended format volumes. The previous version of Disk First Aid identifies the issue but doesn't repair the damage.
2) Disk First Aid 8.6.1 also improves the compatibility of Mac OS Extended format hard disks with Mac OS X.
3) This version of Disk First Aid can repair more kinds of problems on a startup hard disk. However, Apple recommends that you start your computer from a different disk (such as a CD or floppy disk) before repairing the startup disk.

Disk First Aid is an Apple utility that verifies and repairs occasional problems that may occur on your hard disk drive. Disk First Aid may not be able to repair all problems, but it will make your hard disk icon available so that you may reformat the hard drive and restore your data from backup.

Apple iTools plugin 2.0.4 Browser plugin installed by Apple's net services.
This distribution includes a carbonized installer, allowing for installation under both Mac OS 9.x and Mac OS X. It installs iTools Plug- in (Classic) 2.0.4 for Mac OS 9.x and iTools Plug-in (Carbon) 2.0.4 for Mac OS X. There is no information on what is new or changed in this release.

Introducing a new class of Internet services from Apple created exclusively for Mac users. With iTools, you can make the Internet safer for your children, email friends, share your photos and iMovies, and even create your own web site. And iTools are free for Mac OS 9 users.

Apple has announced that QuickTime 5 is now shipping, posting QuickTime 5.01, which is now available for download via the QuickTime 4.12 updater or via Apple's Website or as a standalone QT 5 download. QuickTime Pro is available for $30; owners of QuickTime Pro 3/4 will need to pay again for QuickTime Pro 5, although purchases since early October of last year are except from upgrade fees.

Using the 5.0 Preview 3 updater will not show a new version available. If you have Preview 3 then download the QT 4.1.2 installer and ignore warning you have a newer version installed.

Apple GeForce 2 MX 1.0.1 is firmware and drivers for the GeForce video card. The only change to this release is an updated installer that should work properly on all appropriate machines. [2.0MB]

The GeForce2 MX Driver Update installs new graphics card firmware and Mac OS 9 system extensions which improve performance and applications compatibility. The new firmware also fixes a compatibility problem between the older firmware and newer versions of the NVIDIA system extensions. The firmware on your graphics card will be updated only if an older version is detected. During the firmware update, your display will dim or go dark for 10 to 15 seconds then reappear.

If you use the new NVIDIA extensions with the 1017F1 version firmware, or the new firmware with older extensions, the screen image may appear shifted to one side of your display. To temporarily fix the screen image, change the screen resolution using the Monitors Control Panel or the Monitor Resolution Control Strip. Then run this Update installer to install the new graphics card firmware and new system extensions.

This version of iTunes fixes conflicts with some USB peripherals and improves overall stability. Additional options and keyboard controls for the built-in visual effects generator are now available. For a list of the keyboard commands, turn on visual effects, then press the ? key. You can also choose to always display track information with the visual effect. Turn on visuals, then click the Options button. You can now record audio CDs using external CD-RW drives.
